The Solaris 9 OE provides extensive language support within a single, unified global product. Solaris 9 software includes support for 39 languages and 162 locales, including languages with complex text layout (CTL) writing scripts, such as Arabic, Thai, Hindi and Hebrew. Also included is enhanced support for the development of multilingual applications. Locale support in Solaris 9 is distributed through CD-ROM or the new DVD format.
- The Solaris OE CD-ROM contains partial locales. Partial locales include language handling features for the input, output and character handling in the language, but no translations of the user interface, online help or documentation.
- The Language CD-ROM contains full locales, including message translations for 9 core languages (French, Italian ,German, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean), plus some locale specific utilities.
- 3.The DVD of Solaris 9 software includes the images for the entire Solaris 9 set of CD's, including all partial locales offered on the Solaris OE CD-ROM as well as, all fully localized locales included on the Language CD-ROM.

Yes. All Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and European locales are included on the base CD with localized messages on a separate "Language" CD. These locales and messages are installed through the installation procedure. If a user selects the Solaris 9 DVD, all language support for both partial and full locales are included on the same disk.

The CDE desktop is now available in 12 languages for Solaris 9 software. The Language CD-ROM contains message translations for the entire CDE desktop suite in 9 core languages (French, Italian, German, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean). In addition, users in Poland, Russia and Spain can have access to localized content of the core CDE applications in Russian, Polish and Catalan by accessing the Extra Value directory within the Solaris OE.

Netscape version 4.7 software is provided in 10 languages for the Solaris 9 OE, including English, French, Italian ,German, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Additionally, users will be able to download the Netscape 6.2.2 browser with localized user interface content in the core 10 languages listed above, as well as new language offerings for Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Polish.

All Solaris 9 Unicode locales now support the latest Unicode Standard, Version 3.1. Unicode Version 3.1 has now 94,140 characters, representing a significant increase in the number of supported characters compared to the previous version. Most of the new characters are from China and Japan for their Han ideographs.

As of September 2001, the PRC government mandated a national coding standard, GB18030, which all software products sold in the People's Republic of China must support by law. Solaris software received the highest rating the government provides (A+) for its level of compliance to this new standard. The Solaris globalization architecture
can now handle not only the more than 30,000 characters in Mandarin Chinese, but also minority languages such as Tibetan, Wei, Yi and Mongolian. Applications running on the Solaris platform can easily process files encoded in GB18030, because the Solaris OE has already

Yes. The new zh_HK.BIG5HK locale is provided to support the Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set (HKSCS) in order to facilitate electronic communication in Chinese between Hong Kong government departments and the public.

Beginning with Hindi, Solaris Unicode locales now provide Indian regional language support for the first time. The Devanagari script, upon which Hindi is based, is used by various languages in the Indian subcontinent and covers a large geographical region in South Asia.
The Solaris software platform infrastructure now allows for the input, display and print of Hindi data with these locales.

Printing solutions for all locales are greatly improved with enhancements to the printing filter called "mp". The "mp" printing filter now supports various new options for users to print to low cost printers. The "mp" tool has been enhanced to support multi-byte and complex text layout . Users can print, for instance, Japanese text files to any non-Japanese PostScript or PCL printer, regardless of the current locale displayed on the desktop.
