How To Use These Guidelines - An Introduction
3 Windows and Content Pages > 3.5 Window Title Bars
The information in title bars of main browser windows and pop-up windows differs slightly. The application is identified in the window title for both types of windows. However, pop-up windows also identify the purpose of the window.
Main browser window:
![]()
Pop-up browser window:
| Window Type | Title Bar Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Main Browser Window |
<Application Name> |
See examples below. |
Pop-Up Browser Window |
<Content Page Title> - <Application Name> |
The content page title that identifies the window is the leftmost element of the window title in the window title bar because it is the most distinguishing piece of information for the window. When the window is minimized, this information is displayed with the icon to help users distinguish one minimized icon from another. For more information on content page titles for pop-up windows, see 6.2.2 Secondary-Content Page Titles. |
JavaScript Window |
Not applicable |
Developers have no control over the window title bar content. Also, the contents of these windows follow a specific format. For more information, see 14.2 JavaScript Alerts. |
Note: For both main browser windows and pop-up windows, the name of the browser window is also identified in the window title bar. The location and format of this additional information varies across browsers. Most browsers place "- <Browser Name>" after the title. For example:
Main browser window:
Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Mozilla
Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Netscape
Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Microsoft Internet ExplorerPop-up window:
Advanced Sort - Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Mozilla
Advanced Sort - Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Netscape
Advanced Sort - Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager - Microsoft Internet Explorer
Example: If clicking a "New Policy" button opens a wizard into its own pop-up window, then that window title is always "New Policy - <product name>" regardless of which wizard step is the current one.
