Appendix G - Badging Icons

Tree icons in Sun browser-based applications can display badges to indicate alarms or status. The badges are not created dynamically. Therefore, they must be incorporated into a tree icon itself. As a consequence, any tree icon that can be badged must be created in a set that contains the unbadged icon and all badged variations. The location of the primary image within the set remains constant regardless of whether a badge is applied. Creating the icons as a set ensures that icon and badge placement are always consistent.

G-1 Creating Tree Icons

Standard tree icons are 19-pixels square. The icon contains a primary image that is 16-pixels square, which leaves at least a three pixel overlap for a badge. Badges are always located at the bottom right corner of the icon. A one-pixel white line is added at the intersection of the badge and the primary image. The one-pixel line helps to set the badge apart from the primary image. Make sure to use the badges associated with each release. (Alarm badges are often restyled as the brand evolves.) Alarm and status badge icon files are available from 2.4.3 Icons, Glyphs, and Graphics Repository).
