Grab Ahold Of The Code
Dig deeper into Java technologies with Hands-on Labs.
Project Darkstar is an application server designed from the ground up to support games and gamelike content on the Internet. Many online game developers are already working with Project Darkstar today. The needs of massively multiplayer, highly interactive, event-driven content and the programmers who code it are significantly different from those of traditional web applications. For this reason, Project Darkstar has developed a totally new application coding model tailored specifically to addressing those needs. This Hands-on Lab introduces programming game servers using Project Darkstar from Sun Labs. It steps attendees through the construction of a simple textual Multi-User Dungeon (MUD). A Text MUD is a multiuser textual world simulation, much like a text adventure game but supporting many users in the same world at once. Prerequisites: To perform the tasks in this lab, participants should have basic Java programming language skills. Previous exposure to game programming or MUDs is a plus but not required. At the JavaOne conference, this lab will be presented in Hall E (Room# 132). Please bring your laptops to this lab as there will be no machines provided in this room.
Software requirements: Please make sure to install the following software prior to coming to this lab:You need to be a registered Sun Developer Network member to download the lab and view the instructions.
