The Desktop Java Technology Lovers Survival Guide
TS-5500

Presenter: Joe Winchester, IBM UK

It's been 10 years since Java technology was first released, and in that time, it has gone through many different stages of evolution. It began as a concept for helping run cable TV set-top boxes and then, through the explosion of the Internet, became the way to embed desktop functionality in web pages. Since then it's been batted around to the server through a plethora of frameworks and then onto mobile and embedded devices, all the time having to reinvent and change itself to remain relevant on the desktop. Ten years on, this presentation discusses the history of why things are the way they are, looks at the current state of desktop Java technology, and gazes into the future to the initiatives and demands of the future and where desktop Java technology will be in 10 years' time.

The idea of the presentation is to take a look--both serious and lighthearted--at desktop Java technology and the struggles it has had to endure. It also aims to leave the audience with a good feeling for the future and a renewed energy and enthusiasm for everything great that's going on in the Java technology space and the health and vitality of the desktop.
