Flooring the Accelerator: How Open Source Is Reshaping an Industry

Many billions of mobile and embedded devices are part of our daily lives--they are constant companions, they are lifestyle statements, they are increasingly our window to the world. Yet growth and innovation in the mobile and embedded industry have long been stunted by a multitude of inconsistent platforms, cumbersome content creation and deployment cycles, and barriers to market access. Over the last 18 months, open-source technology--open-source Java technology in particular--has reached a level of penetration and maturity that is disrupting old models and reshaping the very mechanisms the mobile and embedded industry has been built on.

This session analyzes key underlying workings of the mobile and embedded industry and issues that come along with them; gives an overview of some recent developments and projects in the mobile and embedded open-source space; and then analyzes, with a few concrete examples, how open source is flooring the accelerator of change.
