Improving Application Performance with Monitoring and Profilin
TS-6000

Presenter: Jaroslav Bachorik, Sun Microsystems, Inc.; Gregg Sporar, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Have you ever wondered why your application is running slowly? Or why it is using so much memory? A variety of tools is available to help you answer these questions, but the situations in which those tools perform best vary widely. Some of the tools are best for tracking down CPU bottlenecks; others are better at resolving memory usage issues. Some of the tools have different capabilities, depending on the environment: operating system, JDK release, local or remote access, and so on. How do you find the correct tool for the job?

This session provides answers by describing the capabilities of a wide variety of open-source monitoring and profiling tools. It features demonstrations of operating system tools, JDK software tools, the new VisualVM tool, and the NetBeans Profiler module.

The session includes demonstrations of common and Java platform-specific performance problems from both a developer and end-user point of view and should be attended by anyone interested in performance monitoring of Java technology-based applications.
