Defective Java Code: Turning WTF Code into a Learning Experience
TS-6589

Presenter: William Pugh, Univ. of Maryland

This presentation showcases programming mistakes found in production code and discusses lessons learned about how to construct high-quality software. Many of the bugs presented are ones detected by static analysis tools such as FindBugs or are programming puzzlers that don't easily fit into the multiple-choice format required for a JavaOne conference puzzles presentation. The session shows real bugs in real code, imparts statistics, and names names. Among other topics, it showcases bugs found by FindBugs in the FindBugs code base and in the JDK software, reports bug counts in Google's code base, and weighs in (with statistics) on the contentious question of whether equals() should be implemented by use of instanceof or getClass().
