Pump Up Your Technical Knowledge
Listen and watch as industry luminaries bring you the latest on Java technologies
Although much has been said about JavaServer Faces technology and Ajax recently, the focus has been primarily on traditional Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) servlet containers and little information is available on how to use these technologies together in portlets: This is because it is not at all trivial to do so. With JavaServer Faces technology, two main methodologies are used to provide Ajax support: using a specialized servlet or using a custom PhaseListener. This session covers the issues involved in both of these solutions: the problems associated with accessing a servlet in a portal environment and the separate set of issues involved in providing a portal-aware PhaseListener. These complexities become even more convoluted in an environment that uses Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP). This session shows how to create slick Ajax-enabled, JavaServer Faces technology-based portlet applications, explaining the various pieces of the puzzle, including an in-depth look at the Java code needed to work around the awkward parts of the system.
