Sun CAT 1.0 User's Guide

Sun Commerce Animation Tutorial (Sun CAT) is a simple application similar to Neko. Originally developed on the X Windows platform in 1990 by Mayasuki Koba, Neko has been ported to numerous platforms. Neko consists of an animated cat that chases a mouse around a window.

Sun CAT will run on any MIDP 1.0 device or emulator. To load the catalog and make mock purchases, your device must be able to make HTTPS connections. Although HTTPS is not mandated by the MIDP 1.0 specification, it is used in this example to demonstrate how credit card information may be securely transmitted from a MIDlet client to a server. Sun CAT has been successfully tested on a Motorola i85s on Nextel's network.

The Main Screen

The main screen of Sun CAT is simply the animation. You can move the mouse around the screen using the arrow keys or a pointer, if your device supports it. The cat chases the mouse. If you don't play with it for a while, the cat yawns and goes to sleep. When it's near the edges of the screen, it scratches at them. The following image is from the J2ME Wireless Toolkit emulator:

When you first install Sun CAT, two commands are available from the main screen. You can Exit the application or Shop for new images. When you select Shop, Sun CAT connects to a server and downloads a catalog of images, called skins, that you may purchase.

The Catalog Screen

The catalog screen shows the skins that are available on the server. Any skins you already own are not shown in the catalog.

From the catalog screen, you have several options. You can use the Back command to return to the main screen without buying anything. You can see additional details about an item with the Details command. You can place an item into your shopping cart using Add to cart.

The Cart Screen

The contents of your shopping cart are displayed each time you add an item. The shopping cart provides a total amount and shows its contents:

If you'd like to add items to your cart, the Shop command will return you to the catalog screen. If you'd like to cancel your order altogether, select Cancel to return to the main screen. As with the catalog screen, the shopping cart screen also features a Details command that shows additional information about an item in the cart. If you decide you don't want to buy a skin, select Remove to take it out of your cart.

Finally, when you're done shopping and want to buy the items in your cart, choose Checkout. This command takes you to the checkout screen:

Fill in your credit card information and select the Buy command to receive the new skins. They will be downloaded from the server to your device and the first new skin will be made current.

The Skins Screen

As soon as you own more than one skin, you have an additional command available from the main screen. Skins will display a screen that allows you to select the current skin. You may also view details about a skin and, if you wish, remove skins from your device. The skins screen is shown below.
