Wireless portal providers host web sites for developers to drop off and download
interesting code. Some portal providers act as brokers and do such things as:
- Provide MIDlet exchange centers where some MIDlets are downloaded for free, and others are official from handheld manufacturers or ISVs and sold for a fee.
- Cut deals with handheld manufacturers who have Java-based wireless applications. The manufacturer pays the broker a fee and in exchange wireless applications for their devices are more widely available to developers for download.
Many popular web sites have wireless web portals you can access from your personal computer or by mobile devices that support Compact HTML or WAP. Your mobile device must be Internet-connectable and have a service that enables an Internet connection if you want to use your handheld to post or download an application.
