This shop is marketed to consumers world-wide on Sony Ericsson's country web sites, with product in-box promotions, and through e-mail marketing.

Sony Ericsson also undertakes various initiatives to help developers gain industry recognition, consumer and media exposure. One important such initiative is the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004, a big Java game development competition, where Sony Ericsson issued press releases and engaged in PR activities, performed online marketing in 22 different countries, e-mail marketing to its consumer database, external banner advertising on various gaming sites, set up a campaign web site where consumers voted on the games and helped single out the finalists, arranged a peer-to-peer voting competition among a handful of games in its booth at the JavaOne 2004 conference, and helps distribute all the games from the competition, not only the winners.

Sony Ericsson sometimes also offers developers to exhibit as partners in its stand at major industry events or speak at its developer seminars. These opportunities give the developers valuable recognition and exposure.

Application Certification
Certification Program Name Java Verified and Symbian Signed - industry-endorsed application certification programs for Java and Symbian OS enabled mobile phones.
URL address where information can be found on application certification: http://www.javaverified.com
http://www.symbiansigned.com
If relevant, describe different certification types/levels: Java Verified: See www.javaverified.com for more information.

Symbian Signed:

Symbian Signed offers flexible signing options to support the different needs of the Symbian OS ecosystem. These options are:
  • Test House Certification: Suitable for ISVs with a small number of applications. Applications are submitted to the Symbian Signed portal and tested by an independent third party test house.

  • Self Certification: Suitable for ISVs with more than 15 of their own applications that require Symbian Signed status. ISVs or network operators certify their own applications through the re-use of internal, recognized Quality Assurance processes.

  • Publisher Certification: Suitable for application publishers, Symbian OS licensees and network operators or any public software distribution portal owner. The publisher tests and certifies the application using its own quality assurance processes on behalf of the originating ISV.
Please describe full certification process (include forms that need to be filled out by developer): To participate in the Java Verified Program, mobile Java developers can register at www.javaverified.com, and select among the participating global testing providers to test their applications. Also available at www.javaverified.com are detailed explanations of the testing process, testing criteria, pricing, and access to member companies' marketing and distribution programs.
Cost to developer for application certification: The developer pays a one-time fee for getting a digital certificate, proving the company's identity, and then separate testing fees for each new application or retesting version submitted for testing to the independent test houses. Please refer to http://www.javaverified.com and http://www.symbiansigned.com for pricing information.

Please describe full partnership process to distribute applications to customer base (include forms that need to filled out): Sony Ericsson's content and applications strategy involves giving consumers easy access to content/applications in a number of ways:

1) Preloaded content, mostly branded, from selected partners on its phones.
2) PlayNowTM top downloads links directly from the phone menu.
3) Sony Ericsson smartphones feature an Over-the-Air Application Shop download client and on-device software catalog.
4) Feature CD with applications distributed in product boxes (this is used for e.g. Sony Ericsson P800/P900/P910 smartphones).
5) Downloadable content from Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads (www.SonyEricsson.com/fun) and Sony Ericsson Application Shop (www.SonyEricsson.com/applicationshop).

Please note that all new applications submitted for distribution to Sony Ericsson consumer channels need to be Java Verified or Symbian Signed.

The Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads is reserved for branded content and selected partners only, whom Sony Ericsson has evaluated thoroughly and decided to sign distribution agreements with (in which case the development company will get a Mobile Multimedia Content License Agreement for review and signing). Also applications and content for preload, product in-box CD distribution and PlayNowTM links are reserved for close partners to Sony Ericsson.

The Sony Ericsson Application Shop is a valuable go-to-market channel available to any third party application developer who has developed an application for Sony Ericsson phones. We have teamed up with Handango to provide this service. In order to get your application published in the Application Shop, you need to be a registered Handango Software Partner and have signed a Software Partner agreement. When done, the developer gets access to the online application submission process. Approval and publishing of the application will generally be managed within a few days of submission. In addition to checking that the application is in fact Java Verified or Symbian Signed, Handango will perform a number of other tests agreed with Sony Ericsson, including checking that the application does not contains any pornographic, racist, terrorist-related, or malignant material.
