Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8 is a J2EE 1.4 platform compatible server for the development and deployment of J2EE applications and Java Web Services, features support for JavaServer Faces technology, and is free for both development and deployment.
These new features for developers are included in the product:

- Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.4 compatible
- JavaServer Faces 1.0 Support, a technology that simplifies building user interfaces for JavaServer applications
- Web Services for J2EE 1.1, providing portable Web-service descriptors
- WS-I Basic Profile 1.0, enables interoperability between WSDL and SOAP
- JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library Support, encapsulates core functionality common to many JSP applications
- Developer Tools for J2EE Applications, includes tools to support J2EE application packaging, assembly, deployment, and verification
- Upgrade Tool, for migrating configuration files from Application Server 7, PE
- Migration Tool, for migrating applications from BEA, IBM, and Jboss
- Apache Ant 1.5, for building multiplatform applications
- Quick Start Guide, includes the basics to get up and running quickly on the Application Server
- J2EE 1.4 Tutorial, a beginner's guide to developing enterprise applications on the Application Server
- Sample Applications for command-line tools, demonstrate the use of the command line facilities and Ant to quickly compile, assemble, and deploy small-scale technology-focused applications
- Updated Java BluePrints, provide practical design advice for designers of enterprise and wireless Java applications, including Java Pet Store, Java Adventure Builder Reference Application for Web services, and Smart Ticket Sample Application
Operational Features
- Download Size and Memory Footprint, represents a 50 percent reduction compared to Application Server 7, and a 55 percent improvement in the requirement for startup memory
- Performance Improvements, including deployment and runtime improvements, XSLTC, and bug fixes
- Concurrent Message Delivery with the Sun Java System Message Queue 3.5 SP1
- Monitoring, for monitoring statistics and data that pertain to performance and availability
- Improved Administration GUI and Log Viewer, through a new browser-based Administration Console GUI and through the command line. In addition, a Log Viewer has been added to the administration GUI
- PointBase 4.6, an included database for running samples
Additional Features in the Platform Edition
The Application Server is included with the free J2EE 1.4 SDK. The J2EE 1.4 platform includes enhanced versions of many key J2EE technologies:
- J2EE Connector Architecture 1.5, inbound resource adaptor and Java Message Service (JMS) pluggability
- Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 2.1, time-service and EJB Web-service endpoint
- JavaServer Pages (JSP) 2.0, expression language and tag library
- Java Servlet 2.4, Web-service endpoint and filter
- JavaMail 1.3, a set of abstract classes that model a mail system
- Java Message Service 1.1, a messaging standard that enables J2EE application components to create, send, receive, and read messages
- Java API for XML parsing (JAXP) 1.2, an API with which applications can parse and transform XML documents
- Java API for XML-based RPC (JAX-RPC) 1.1, provides mapping for WSDL and Java Technology
- SOAP with Attachments API for Java (SAAJ) 1.2, an API for SOAP-based messaging that fosters the creation of SOAP messages with attachments
- Java API for XML Registries (JAXR) 1.0, a uniform and standard API for accessing XML registries, such as those for UDDI and ebXML
- Java Management Extensions (JMX) 1.2, APIs that support the tools for building distributed, modular, and dynamic applications on the Web
- Java Authorization Service Provider Contract for Containers (JACC) 1.0, definitions of security contracts between a J2EE application server and authorization policy modules
- JavaServer Pages Standard Libraries (JSTL) 1.1, a tag library that supports common, structural tasks
- J2EE Application Deployment API 1.1, JavaBeans components for editing deployment information
- J2EE Management API 1.0, an information model for management that includes attributes, events, statistics, and state management
