I18N Testing: Testing Input Methods

Solaris Operating Environment

For European locales, and other locales that use extended ASCII characters, you can type such characters on a keyboard customized for a specific locale. Alternatively, you can use the Compose key on a standard keyboard, followed by a sequence of characters that compose the desired character. See Solaris documentation for changing the keyboard, or use the vkbk(1) program.

For Asian locales, the most common input method tool in the Solaris operating environment is called htt. The files listed below describe the input methods for these locales. However, before you can view these files, your system must:

  • run under the desired locale, with the locale-specific htt program invoked
  • contain the correct fonts installed for the locale

Intel Platforms

There are locale-specific Windows95 or Windows NT versions for many locales. For the Asian locales, each has its own input methods tools, with online documentation in the language of that locale.

It is often possible, through trial and error, to understand the basics of input method tools for languages that you do not know. It is recommended, however, that someone familiar with a given language perform the input method tests.
