I18N Testing: Locale-specific Non-message File Preparation Examples

This information is specific to I18N testing of HTML help files that reside in locale-specific locations, but the principles apply to other C, C++, and Java language products that have locale-specific files other than message catalogs.

For instance, you can modify HTML help files to take a unique prefix in the TITLE and H1 areas. Once the files are installed in the correct locale-specific locations, they display the prefix when the product is run in the target locale.

Other localizable non-message files that you can modify to verify that the information in them is obtained from locale-specific files applicable to your product include:

  • product examples found in locale-specific locations
  • help files (HTML or text)--see the information and approaches described above
  • image files--swap an image with another image
  • help, table of contents, and index files
  • font names, styles, and sizes in localizable non-message files
  • row, column, width and height values in localizable non-message files
  • license files, if they reside in locale-specific locations

Samples and Scripts

NOTE: Please remember that these are sample scripts and tools that may need customization for the syntax, naming conventions, and locations of the your product's message files. Many of the scripts are working versions that continue to change dynamically to reflect changes in developing products; they may contain comments and alternate lines.

  • Here is a perl program that adds the prefix to the tags mentioned above.
  • Here is a script that calls the perl program on certain specified files.
  • This script calls the script above, passing in the prefix and locale name
  • This is an example HTML help file that was modified using the above scripts. In this file, the TITLE and H1 tags have a prefix.
