A Practical Guide to Adopting the Solaris 8 OS: Part 2

July 2000

Preface

This white paper, A Practical Guide to Adopting the Solaris 8 Operating Environment, discusses the factors affecting the work of software developers when adopting the Solaris 8 operating environment, especially compatibility issues with existing applications. It then describes the new features in Solaris 8, and summarizes those added in earlier versions (2.6 and 7) of Solaris.

Features that are not directly related to code development, such as installation enhancements and system administration, are not discussed here.

How This White Paper Is Organized

This white paper is divided into three main sections:

  • Application Compatibility with Solaris 8

This section discusses topics such as binary and source compatibility from the point of view of developers upgrading from earlier versions of Solaris software. It documents instances where interfaces have changed, so that developers can quickly adapt existing applications to run under Solaris 8.

  • Solaris 8 Features

This section highlights new commands, system calls, and libraries as an introduction to the new tools available with the Solaris 8 release. Brief descriptions are provided to explain how the new features can be useful, which system calls to use, and where to find more information.

  • Where To Get (More) Help

This section brings together links and pointers to sources of further information.
