Device Configuration Assistant Design Overview

4. Autobooting

Once a system is installed, the Device Configuration Assistant is then invoked with the auto-boot option, which allows the boot to proceed with no user interaction. The user is given the option to interrupt the autoboot process to perhaps edit the device configuration. The interrupt is initiated by pressing the Escape key.

Initially the boot path is parsed and checked for validity. The autoboot process runs the bus enumerators and probe-always BEFs (see Section 6, ISA Devices), but doesn't run the full scan. It only loads the BEF for the device specified by the boot path, and attempts to mount this device. If any errors occur during autoboot, then the menu system is entered at its initial screen.

Autobooting works for any bootable medium (disk, CD-ROM, or network). It is also possible to set up a diskette to autoboot.
