FORTRAN is a general-purpose, procedural, imperative programming language that is especially suited to numeric computation and scientific computing. Fortran 2003 is the current Fortran standard, with the official International Standards Organization (ISO) number of ISO/IEC 1539-1997.

 
Fortress
Fortress is a new programming language designed for high-performance computing (HPC) with high programmability. The Programming Language Research Group (PLRG) at Sun Microsystems Laboratories has just released the first reference implementation of the Fortress programming language. The interpreter runs on the JVM and the source code is available for download, by anyone, at fortress.sunsource.net.
