OSUM Community
Q:
I'm new to the OSUM Community. What is this community about and how do I use it?
A:
Check out this summary of how to get the most from the OSUM Community.
Q:
My university is not listed in the drop-down menu. Is it possible to add my university to the drop-down menu?
A:
First, check to see whether your university has an OSUM club. Select your country from the drop-down menu, then use the search field to locate your university.
Q:
If no one else has started an OSUM club at your university, we encourage you to do so. To start an OSUM club, click on Groups in the main tab bar in the OSUM community, then click on Add a Group. Once you've created your group, you can invite your friends to join. You can get additional support from Sun by registering your OSUM club as an OSUM affiliate. Visit the OSUM Affiliate Program to register your university's OSUM club. I clicked on a link for another page in the OSUM Community but the link doesn't work.
A:
The pages that you can access in OSUM are determined by the country and school that you select. If you select a particular country from the drop-down menu at the top of the page, you will be able to see pages from only that country.
Q:
I forgot my password. Is it possible to retrieve it?
A:
You can retrieve your password if you know the email address for the profile. Click the Forgot Password link on the login page.
Q:
I have multiple OSUM accounts but am only using one. Is it possible to delete my inactive account?
A:
To delete an OSUM profile, log in as that user, click My Settings, and "Delete my profile".
Q:
The image I uploaded for my group is truncated, out of proportion, or not clear. What should I do?
A:
If you want your group image to keep its proportions and not look fuzzy (pixelated) once you upload it, upload a square image that is at least 171 pixels high by 171 pixels wide.
Q:
Currently, only the students I invited can join my group. But some groups allow anyone to join. How can I give the same settings to my group? I tried using the Manage Group option, but there is no option for changing my group's privacy settings.
A:
Unfortunately, once you establish a group, you cannot change its privacy settings. The only option is to delete the group, create a new group, and invite everyone to join again. This is an unfortunate limitation of the Ning platform on which the OSUM community is built.
Q:
Is Google Chrome supported?
A:
Because Google Chrome is still in beta, it is not yet fully supported by Ning, the platform on which the OSUM community site is built. However, the following browsers are supported, so students have plenty of options: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.
OSUM Affiliate Program FAQQ:How do I register for the OSUM Affiliate Program?
A:
Register your university OSUM Group by filling out this form for the OSUM Affiliate Program.
Q:
Why should I register for the OSUM Affiliate Program?
A:
Additional support from Sun is available if you register your OSUM club as an OSUM affiliate. If you choose to register as an OSUM affiliate, your university will be added to the drop-down menu. Schools are added to the drop-down menu based on participation in the OSUM Affiliate Program.
Q:
I submitted my OSUM Affiliate registration yesterday, but I haven't heard anything from anyone. Should I resubmit the form?
A:
The OSUM Affiliate Program handles registrations for the program worldwide. Allow eight days for program staff to send notification that your university has been accepted.
Q:
I tried to register my OSUM club as part of the OSUM Affiliate Program, but there is another OSUM club at my school. Can more than one OSUM club at the same school be part of the OSUM Affiliate Program?
A:
Sun limits OSUM Affiliate Program membership to one OSUM Affiliate club per school.
If two OSUM clubs from the same school join the OSUM Affiliate Program, program staff will select the group to support based on the level of activity and number of members of the OSUM clubs. If you have urgent questions regarding the OSUM Affiliate Program, you can reach us here. Campus Ambassador Program FAQFor Students Q:What is a campus ambassador internship?

You will also be eligible for discounts to be industry certified on Sun's technologies.
Q:
Is there an opening at my school or university?
A:
Sun has openings for campus ambassador interns at select schools all over the world.
Q:
How can I apply?

Q:
What are the campus ambassador's responsibilities?
A:
As a campus ambassador, you will represent Sun to students and professors at your university. The position is geared toward independent self-starters who are not afraid to speak in public. You'll undergo self-paced online training on Sun's latest open-source technologies, then make presentations to students interested in technology. You can either work with existing groups, such as your computer science department, or create your own open-source users' group. Please note that the exact number of hours that a campus ambassador works and the responsibilities vary by country.
Q:
What is the pay?
A:
Sun's program provides a generous hourly wage according to local market conditions in your country.
Q:
Is the Campus Ambassador Program related to other technology or student programs?
A:
As part of creating community, ambassadors often work alongside other student technology groups, such as UNIX/Linux user groups, computer science clubs, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and others. Additional programs are available through Sun Academic Initiative (SAI).
Q:
Can I volunteer if my school will not allow me to work?
A:
Yes. If you want to volunteer, get involved with the OSUM community. You may be able to start or join an OSUM club on your campus.
Q:
What's in it for me?
A:
A great job, great pay, flexible hours, free pizza, industry-certified experience, a worldwide network of ambassadors -- what more could you ask for? Sun's Campus Ambassador Program will train you on Sun's latest technologies, give you the tools to present, and make your resume look great in the process.
For Professors
Q:
My student wants to receive credit for the work that he or she is doing on this program. But what exactly does a campus ambassador do?
A:
Sun campus ambassadors receive training on Sun's latest technologies, including Java technology, NetBeans IDE, Sun Studio, OpenOffice, and more. Ambassadors then give tech talks, which bring together groups of students interested in open-source technologies. Sun provides a packet of information for students who are pursuing Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) credits that provides details on these possibilities. Students can share that information with you.
Q:
What courses or training will the student receive?
A:
The student will receive in-depth training on StarOffice, Java, Solaris, NetBeans, Sun SPOT, and Sun Studio technologies, among others. Through the Sun Academic Initiative (SAI), your student will also be eligible to receive discounts on Sun certification exams on Java technology, Solaris OS, and network administration.
Q:
How do I recommend my student for a campus ambassador internship?
A:
Please send an email to the Sun Campus Ambassador Program coordinators.
Q:
What's in it for me?
A:
Sun's Campus Ambassador Program is first and foremost about building community. Ambassadors and students often go on to develop open-source research projects. After graduation, your students' expertise becomes a valuable asset in the marketplace. Professors can also use Sun's expertise to build research partnerships. Additionally, Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) gives professors free curriculum materials, lecture notes, and more.
For Other University Officials
Q:
What kind of hours and responsibilities are expected?
A:
Hours vary by country. In the United States, for example, ambassadors are expected to work approximately five hours per week. They take part in an orientation session that is conducted online after class. After that, training is all self-paced and online.
Q:
How does Sun pay the student?
A:
Sun pays campus ambassadors a generous hourly wage according to local market conditions in each country.
Q:
Is the student working for Sun or for the university?
A:
Both.
Q:
What's in it for the school or university?
A:
By taking part in the Campus Ambassador Program, your school or university can benefit from being part of the open-source community and Sun Microsystems. This translates into free training for students, lively discussions about today's hot technologies, and more. Students often use their experience with Sun as a basis for research and other projects.
Q:
Additionally, educational institutions can take advantage of the Sun Academic Initiative (SAI), which provides free curriculum, discounted certification for students, and more. A student from another country who attends our school or university -- an international student -- wants to work as our campus ambassador. Will this work require a special visa?
A:
The chance to work as a campus ambassador intern for Sun Microsystems is an excellent way for students to build technology skills and credentials in the marketplace. Despite this, restrictions may exist on the ability of international students to work outside the university. Please check with your institution's international student office.
