What Is a Sun Studio Express Build?

The Sun Studio team offers interim development builds of future Sun Studio product releases. These builds allow you to preview and provide feedback on new features and enhancements under development.

Express builds are fully-functional, preview software. The focus is on new features being introduced into the Sun Studio product. The intent is to collaborate with the developer community by gathering feedback through the Sun Studio forums and the bug/RFE (request for enhancement) database.

Feature Highlights in This Express Build

The Sun Studio IDE is based on NetBeans IDE 6.1. There are numerous improvements to the C, C++, and Fortran compilers, the assembler, and libraries. Also, much of the newly released OpenMP 3.0 specifications features have been implemented in the compilers. And, profiling of MPI programs is enabled in the Performance Analyzer.

Also included is the NetBeans DTrace GUI Plugin. This is a graphical user interface (GUI) for running DTrace scripts.

These new features are all described in the July 2008 Express README, and wiki pages.

What‘s in Sun Studio?

Sun Studio software consists of a number of tools for application developers, including compilers, libraries, debuggers, and performance analysis tools. To get an idea of what's in the package, check out the documentation, in particular the set of command-line tools in the man1 directory.

Where‘s the Documentation?

Refer to the Sun Studio July 2008 Express wiki pages for more detailed information and links to the current documentation set. Note that not all the man pages in the download bits have been updated for this express program build.
