Sun Studio Express 3 - December 2006 Build

What Is This?

The Sun Studio engineering team now offers, for download and use, quality builds of future Sun Studio product releases currently under development. The Sun Studio Express Program provides developers an early look at new features and technologies for testing and feedback. This December 2006 build is the third build delivered to the Sun Studio Express program.

What is a Sun Studio Express Build?

Express builds are fully-functional, quality software that are focused on new features being introduced into the Sun Studio product. The intent is to collaborate with our partners and customers by gathering feedback through the Sun Studio forums. It should be noted that these Express builds should not be used to generate production-level applications. Each Express build has a main feature that the Sun Studio engineering team is making available for the first time.

New in This Express Build

In this Sun Studio Express 3 - December 2006 Build, new features have been added to the compilers and tools that are currently under development for both SPARC and x86 platforms. These new and improved features are described in the December 2006 Express build README, and include fixes to bugs reported in previous builds.

Also in this build, we release a new Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The new Sun Studio IDE is based on NetBeans 5.5.1 and adds many new features. It supports C and C++ projects, and includes appropriate project templates for applications, dynamic and static libraries, and projects with existing code. The IDE includes a C and C++ class browser. The powerful language-aware built-in editor supports code completion. This build also includes C, C++, and Fortran compilers for the Linux platform, and improvements to the previously released Data Race Detection Tool, which has been renamed the Sun Studio Thread Analyzer.

Note that Sun Studio software includes third-party technologies governed by a third party license readme  file. Similarly, NetBeans includes third-party technologies governed by a NetBeans third-party license readme file, as is NetBeans C++ governed by its own NetBeans C++ third-party license readme file.

Step 3:
Sign on to the the Sun Studio forums to receive the latest information about this Express build from engineering, and to provide feedback and ask questions.

Where's the Documentation?

The man pages and readmes in the download bits have not been updated for this express program build. The new features are documented in articles and tutorials that are linked from the README file. That's why you need to read December 2006 Express build README page.

Go here for full Sun Studio 11 compiler documentation.
