What is the name of the product?
A:
Sun Studio 11 software is the latest version of our world class compilers and performance tools designed for the C, C++ and Fortran developer communities. It is the latest in the long history of tools previously named Sun WorkShop software, Forte Developer software, and Sun ONE Studio software.

What is in Sun Studio 11 software and why should I care about it?
A:
Sun Studio 11 delivers great new optimizations and features:
  • Record-setting performance with Optimizing C, C++, and Fortran Compilers. Numerous SPEC world records have been announced with Solaris 10 OS on our new Sun Fire x-series (Galaxy) servers.
  • Maximize performance throughput with the newest multi-core UltraSPARC and x64/x86-based systems, including those based on dual-core Opteron, Niagara and Panther.
  • Support of the OpenMP v2.5 API, with additional support of Autoscoping on all compilers: C, C++, and Fortran
  • Dataspace profiling on UltraSPARC systems, which provide unique views in to the performance costs associated with application memory references.
  • Increase in the addressability of larger data sets with the Solaris OS on x64 systems

Q:
What about pricing and packaging?
A:
Sun Studio 11 software introduces a new pricing model for developer tools. There is no longer a license fee for Sun Studio 11 software. Yes, Sun Studio 11 is Free! However, there are a variety of support options, available with Sun Studio 11 software, to fit the needs of all customers. Sun Software Support Service (S4) is available at the release of Sun Studio 11 software and additional, new, Sun Developer Support Plans will be available in December 2005. The media for all three versions: Solaris OS on SPARC. Solaris OS on x64/x86, and Linux are in the product box. Users are able to install the software on the platform of their choice. A serial number is no longer required to "unlock" the software.

What platforms are supported?
A:
This product is supported on Solaris SPARC and x86/x64 platforms including AMD Opteron 32-bit and 64-bit processors. The following Linux distributions are supported:
  • SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Can I install Sun Studio 11 software over an older product like Sun Studio 10 software?
A:
No. You must install Sun Studio 11 software in a different directory.

How do I start the IDE?
A:
You start the Sun Studio 11 IDE with the sunstudio command. For more information, see the sunstudio(1) man page.

Q:
What about the Linux version?
A:
This release is supported on the Linux OS. This version contains the following components:
  • Same NetBeans-based IDE as on our other supported platforms
  • Editors of choice: (GVIM, XEmacs, builtin)
  • Distributed building utility (dmake)
  • CLI- and GUI-based debugger (dbx) for GCC generated binaries
  • Performance Tools (including Analyzer) for tuning GCC generated executables
  • X-Designer GUI builder
  • Documentation including Release Notes, man pages, READMEs, and Install Guide.

Q:
What are these new Sun Developer Support Plan offerings for Sun Studio 11 software?
A:
The support plan offerings have been tailored to fit the needs of the Enterprise Developer. They include traditional product support, Educational Credits, Product Updates and specialized developer support on a per incident basis.

When will the Sun Developer Support Plan offerings be available?
A:
Sun Studio 11 software will release with the standard S4 support offering. The new Sun Developer Support Plan offerings will be announced and rolled out in December 2005.

Q:
Are all the versions of Forte Developer and Sun Studio software now free?
A:
No. Forte Developer 6 update 2 for High Performance Computing software, as well as Sun Studio 9 software and Sun Studio 10 software will remain orderable, at current price levels, for the time being.

Q:
When will the Sun Studio 11 software Media Kits be orderable and when will they ship?
A:
The Media Kits are orderable on November 8, 2005 and will begin shipping on January 11, 2006. They will be available in English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. The multilanguage version will also be downloadable on December 19, 2005.
