Getting Started Guide

This Getting Started Guide prepares you to install this release.
 

System Requirements for SXDE 1/08


     Requirement Description

     Memory 768MB minimum. If your system has insufficient memory, the installation fails. See the Getting Started Guide for more information.

     Disk space A reasonable minimum is 10GB.
The absolute minimum disk space required is 9GB. For an English-only installation this includes roughly 8GB for the / partition (leaving 2GB free), 500MB for swap, and 500MB for /export/home user accounts.

     Drive A DVD drive is required.

   Network interface

One network interface is required.

     USB ports 2 USB ports are required.

     Graphics card A graphics card is required.
Note: To install without a graphics card, you must select the Solaris Express choice on the initial GRUB screen that comes up when you first boot from the installation DVD. The Solaris Express selection provides a choice for a text-based installation.

Note: Back up your system. As with any operating system installation, your existing data can be overwritten!

    If your driver was not included in the download, check these resources.
    • Solaris WiFi team is working on adding support for some of the most popular wireless network cards to the Solaris OS. All of the drivers and tools produced by the team will be pre-released to the OpenSolaris community and then integrated into the next Solaris OS release.
    • OpenSolaris's Device Driver community is working on a number of driver projects.
    • solaris-x86.org provides free and commercial drivers.
    • Masayuki Murayama's website. He has close to 2 dozen device driver for the Solaris OS.
