Learning Path: Getting Started with MIDP 2.0

The goal of this learning path is to guide you through resources in a carefully considered order, so you can learn how to develop applications for MIDP 2.0 devices more quickly and confidently. It is divided into five sections:

• Basics
• The Big Picture
• User Interface
• Networking
• Optional Packages

This learning path assumes you already know the Java programming language and how to develop desktop applications in it. If you don't, check out java.sun.com's Tutorials and Short Courses.

Once you know the fundamentals of Java development, you can give yourself a quick infusion of MIDP with the Wireless Development Tutorial Part I.

For a more comprehensive grounding in MIDP 1.0, try the Getting Started With MIDP learning path. Everything you learn in MIDP 1.0 is still useful in MIDP 2.0, so this learning path provides an excellent foundation for learning MIDP 2.0.

• Understanding JSR 185 describes at a very high level the Java Technology for the Wireless Industry (JTWI) specification, a kind of über-specification that includes and extends MIDP 2.0.
• What's New in MIDP 2.0 provides a brief overview of all the new features added to those of MIDP 1.0 in version 2.0. It's filled with useful code samples.
• Understanding MIDP 2.0's Security Architecture provides a detailed description of new security features in MIDP 2.0, including permissions, protection domains, and MIDlet suite signing.
• What's New in the J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.0 surveys the new features in version 2.0 of the toolkit. You'll learn about its support for MIDP 2.0, MMAPI, and WMA, and about protection domains, MIDlet suite signing, and a great feature called "Run via OTA."
• Over-the-Air Provisioning with the J2ME Wireless Toolkit provides further information on using the J2ME Wireless Toolkit for OTA testing.

• Using Custom Items in MIDP 2.0 is a technical tip that describes how you can write your own items for inclusion in forms.

• Part II: The Java APIs for Bluetooth Wireless Technology describes the JSR 82 standard and shows how to use its APIs to access Bluetooth devices from your own applications.
